The Bloomfield Track became the site of one of Australia's biggest environmental protests It began on a small scale with locals, and then orgainzed through state and national conservation organizations, attracting people from all parts of Australia and from all walks of life, people chained themselves to trees and buried themselves up to their necks in the ground in front of bulldozers to stop the road. While the road did eventually go through, the protesters did get the regions recognized and in 1988 the area was declared World Heritage.
