About China...

Information

About China (PRC and ROC)

China is a cultural region, ancient civilization, and nation in East Asia. It is one of the world's oldest civilizations, consisting of states and cultures dating back more than six millennia. The stalemate of the last Chinese Civil War has resulted in two political states using the name China:
  • The People's Republic of China (PRC), commonly known as "China," which controls mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau
  • The Republic of China (ROC), commonly known as "Taiwan," which controls the island of Taiwan and its surrounding islands. China is one of the world's oldest continuous civilizations.
It has the world's longest continuously used written language system, and the source of some of the world's great inventions, including the Four Great Inventions of ancient China: paper, the compass, gunpowder, and printing.

CHINA

China formally known as the People's Republic of China is a country in Eastern Asia about the same size as the United States of America and with the world's largest population (1,321,851,888 as of July 2007).

Regions of China

China is vast, but it can be divided into the following regions:

  • Northeast: Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang. Dongbei, the "rust belt"
  • North: Shandong, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Henan, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin: The Yellow river basin area, historical heartland of China.
  • North-west: Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai, Xinjiang :grasslands and deserts, nomadic people, Islam.
  • Southwest: Tibet, Yunnan, Guangxi, Guizhou: The exotic part, home to most of the Chinese minorities and spectacular scenery.
  • Southern-central: Anhui, Sichuan, Chongqing, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi. Farming areas.
  • Southeast: Guangdong, Hainan, Fujian. The traditional trading centre.
  • East: Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang. The new economic centre.

Cities in China

China has many large and famous cities. Below is a list of the nine most important to travellers. Other cities are listed under their specific regional section.
  • Beijing — capital city, cultural centre and host of the 2008 Olympics
  • Guangzhou — one of China's most prosperous and liberal cities.
  • Guilin — popular destination for both Chinese and foreign tourists, sensational mountain/river scenery
  • Hangzhou — former capital, famously beautiful city, major centre for the silk industry
  • Kunming — capital of Yunnan, gateway to the villages of the ethnic minorities
  • Nanjing — a former capital with many historic relics
  • Shanghai — China's largest city, famous for its riverside scenery. Major commercial centre; many shopping opportunities
  • Suzhou — "Venice of the East", old city, famous for canals and gardens
  • Xi'an — a former capital, terminus of the ancient Silk Road, home of the terracotta warriors.

History of China

The first civilizations in China arose in the Yangtse and Yellow river valleys at about the same time as Mesopotamia, Egypt and India developed their first civilizations.
For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences. Paper and gunpowder are Chinese inventions and Chinese developments in astronomy, medicine and other fields were extensive. China also explored the world and traded extensively with other nations. When Western traders arrived in the 16th century, China was initially hostile to them. The emperor allowed trade only at Canton (Guangzhou) and imposed a range of restrictions. The first Western base was Portugal's colony Macau, near Canton. By the 19th century, various Western powers had taken various pieces of China and trade was well established.

Several wars were fought in China in that century:
Two Opium Wars pitted China against Western powers. China quickly lost both wars.
The Tai Ping Rebellion was led by a madman claiming to be Christ's younger brother. This was one of the bloodiest wars ever fought; only World War II killed more people. In 1895, China lost the Sino-Japanese war and ceded Taiwan to Japan.

After World War II, outright civil war broke out. More Chinese were killed in this than in resisting Japan. By 1949, the Communists had won and the Kuomintang armies, government and many supporters fled to Taiwan, which had been returned to Chinese control in 1945. The Communist government imposed strict controls over everyday life. Political controls remain tight even though economic controls continue to be relaxed. All the same, as China prepares for entry into the World Trade Organization, more and more reforms bring China closer to the west in terms of public policy.

Dynasties of China

  • The Xia and the Shang (1700 BC to 1027 BC)
  • The Zhou Dynasty, 1027-221 BC
  • The Qin Dynasty, 221-206 BC
  • The Han Dynasty, 206 BC to 220 AD
  • Then for a few hundred years, 220-618, China was not united.
  • The Tang Dynasty, 618-907
  • The Song dynasty, 979-1279
  • The Yuan (Mongol) dynasty, 1279-1368
  • The Ming dynasty, 1368-1644
  • The Qing (Manchu) dynasty, 1644-1911
  • The Republic of China, who ruled China 1911-1949. Beijing has been the capital of China since the Communist victory in the civil war, 1949.

Climate in China

The climate is extremely diverse, from tropical in the South to subarctic in the North. There is also a wide range of terrain with mostly mountains, high plateaus, and deserts in west; while plains, deltas, and hills can be found in the east. On the border between Tibet and Nepal lies Mount Everest, at 8,850 m, being the highest point on earth.

Travel to China

Most travellers will need a visa to get into China. Some travellers will need a dual entry or multiple entry visa. For example, if you enter China on a single entry visa, then go to Hong Kong or Macau, you cannot re-enter mainland China without a new visa. With a multiple entry visa, you can.

  • By plane - While several major airlines fly to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong, budget seats can prove hard to come by.
  • By train - China can be reached by train from many of its neighbouring countries and even all the way from Europe.
  • By Road - It is illegal for foreigners to drive in China without a Chinese license.
  • From Vietnam: For most travellers Hanoi is the origin for any overland journey to China.
  • From Laos: You need to have a Chinese visa beforehand, as there is no way to get one on arrival.
  • From Pakistan: The Karakoram Highway from northern Pakistan into Western China is one of the most spectacular roads in the world. It's closed for tourists for a few months in winter.
  • From Nepal: The road from Nepal to Tibet passes near Mount Everest, and through amazing mountain scenery. Entering Tibet from Nepal is only possible for tourists on package tours.

Getting around China

  • By Plane - China has many domestic flights to all the major cities and tourist destinations.
  • By train - Train travel is the major mode of long-distance transportation for the Chinese themselves, with an extensive network of routes covering the entire country.
  • There are five classes of travel: hard seats, soft seats, hard sleepers, soft sleepers, standing
  • By Bus - Travelling by public city buses is inexpensive and ideal for inner city travel or short distance travel
  • By subway - Generally these are modern, clean and efficient. The signs and ticket machines are in both English and Chinese.
  • By taxi - Taxis are common, and reasonably priced. Even in major cities like Shanghai or Beijing, you are unlikely to find an English-speaking taxi driver. If you try to say the name of your destination in Chinese (but with your native pronunciation), you may not be understood. Get business cards for your hotel, and for restaurants you like, to show taxi drivers.
  • By bicycle - Bikes are the most common form of transportation in China
  • By motorcycle - Motorcycle taxis are common, especially in smaller cities and rural areas. They are usually cheap and effective but somewhat scary. The fares are negotiable.
  • By pedicab (rickshaw)

Things to do and see in China

  • Great Wall of China
  • Tibet
  • Silk Road
  • Hainan island, tropical paradise
  • Karst scenery - Karst is type of limestone formation named after an area in Slovenia.
Large parts of Southern China have karst terrain : Wu Yi Mountain in Fujian, Guilin and Yangshuo in Guangxi, and much of Guizhou province

China has dozens of UNESCO World Heritage sites. There are several sacred sites in China that have famous Buddhist art:

  • The 1,500-year-old Yungang Grottoes near Datong in sichuan Province. There are more than 51,000 Buddhist carvings in the recesses and caves that cover the mountainsides in the Yangang Valley.
  • The Mogao Caves, near Dunhuang in Gansu province, with both art and manuscripts, some dating back to the 4th century
  • Dazu Rock Carvings near Chongqing, date from the 7-13th century
  • The Longmen Grottoes near Luoyang, 5th to 10th century

Learn some of the traditional arts, such as "tai chi" or calligraphy. Other possibilities include learning to play traditional Chinese instruments (inquire in shops that sell these, they usually have classes), cooking Chinese cuisine, or even singing Chinese Opera.

National Holidays in China

China is a huge country with endless travel opportunities. However, during holidays, tickets of any kind are hard to come by and the rates for hotel rooms skyrocket. It can be quite difficult to find a seat of any kind, especially for those travelling from remote western China to the east coast or in the opposite direction.

Chinese New Year Dates
2007 - 18 February
2008 - 7 February
2009 - 26 January
2010 - 14 February

Lantern Festival, 15th day of the 1st lunar month, just after Chinese New Year, usually in February or March.
Qingming Festival, in April, is called "grave sweeping day" in English. Cemeteries are crowded with people who came to sweep tombs and offer sacrifices.
Dragon Boat Festival, falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, usually in June. Boat races are a traditional part of it.
Double Seventh Festival, the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, usually August, is a festival of romance.
Mid-Autumn Festival or Moon Cake Festival, the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, usually in October.
Double Ninth Festival or Chongyang Festival, 9th day of the 9th lunar month, usually in October.

Currency in China

The official currency of the People's Republic of China is the renminbi often abbreviated RMB.

Chinese Culture

  • Toasting - Chinese toast with the word ganbei ("empty glass", bottoms up), and traditionally you are expected to drain the glass in one swig. If you want to take it easier but still be sociable, say "suibian" before you make the toast, then drink only part of the glass. It may also be possible to have three toasts (traditionally signifying friendship) with the entire company, rather than one separate toast for every individual present.
  • There are no pubs, except in areas with a lot of tourists or expats such as Yangshuo or Shenzhen.
  • Karaoke is huge in China and very a very popular night out.
  • Green tea is served up for free in almost every restaurant and most Chinese teas are always drunk neat, with no sugar or milk.
  • Once taboo, begging is no longer an uncommon sight in China, particularly in major tourist areas.
  • Banned items - The Chinese government uses censorship extensively. Books or magazines mailed in are almost always delayed at customs and sometimes disappear. In particular, support for Tibetan or Taiwan independence is unacceptable. The movies Kundun and Seven Years in Tibet, publications written by or supporting the Dalai Lama, and Lonely Planet's China guidebook (which does not cover Taiwan) are banned under this law.

Respect in China

  • Tipping is not necessary and sometimes considered an inappropriate gesture.
  • When presenting a business card or any other important piece of paper, it is always considered polite to hand it with both hands at the same time, with the thumbs and index fingers holding either side of the document. Accept in the same way.
  • If you smoke (and even if you don't), it is always considered polite to offer a cigarette to those you meet, as long as they are of adult age.
  • When toasting, it is best to look directly in the eyes of those you are toasting with. Keep in mind that although the Chinese love to drink copious amounts of alcohol, public drunkenness is frowned upon.
  • Try to avoid political topics, as they usually lead nowhere and can even cause problems. Do not discuss Tibet or Taiwan political issues unless you fully agree with the policies of the PRC regarding these matters, as they are almost invariably met with varying degrees of hostility.
  • It is usually best to spit the bones found in food directly on the table or a small plate for such purpose, or skilfully take them out with your chopsticks and place them there, rather than using your fingers. This may be totally unacceptable to most people from other countries but it is the rule in China. Sticking your chopsticks into your rice and leaving them there is considered taboo, as it is reminiscent of sticks of incense burning at a shrine or funeral and therefore you are seen to be wishing death upon the people at the table.
  • If someone clears his/her throat and spits on a restaurant floor, accept it, as it is also very common indeed throughout most of the country.
  • A small gift taken to a host's home is always very welcome.

TRANS SIBERIAN RAILWAY

The Trans-Siberian Railway is the name given to the three rail routes that traverse Siberia from Moscow. These are:
  • The Trans-Mongolian goes from Moscow to Beijing, China via Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
  • The Trans-Manchurian travels through Siberia and Chinese Manchuria to Beijing.
  • The Trans-Siberian goes from Moscow to the Pacific terminus of Vladivostok.

The Trans-Siberian Railway is the longest railway in the world. It was built between 1891 and 1916 to connect the Russian capital Moscow with the Far-East city of Vladivostok. En route it passes through the cities of Perm, Yekaterinburg, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Chita and Khabarovsk.

Getting to the Trans Siberian

The three termini of the Trans-Siberian are Moscow, Beijing and Vladivostok. Most travelers will need visas for all three countries.

Tickets on the Trans Siberian

Russian train system is different from European ones. The train tickets are bought for fixed dates and all the stops must be planned in advance. If you have a ticket Moscow-Vladivostok and step off the train in Irkutsk, you can't use your ticket for a next train going to Vladivostok. If your stop is not planned in advance and not revealed in your tickets, your ticket will be cancelled and you'll get stuck in Irkutsk.
There are four ways of buying tickets for the trip. You can either purchase them from a travel agent in your own country, a travel agent in the country you will start the journey in, or turn up and buy tickets yourself.

Trans Siberian Timetables

The Trans-Siberian trains have odd schedules - some trains are daily while some go on even dates, some on odd dates and some trains depart only on a couple of days during a week. There are also passing-by trains, which are actually legs of longer, train itineraries. The lower the train number the fewer stops it makes and therefore the faster the journey. Unfortunately, the train number makes no difference to the duration of border crossings.

The Journey

Many of the trains have dining cars, although if you do not speak any Russian, ordering the food will be an experience, to say the least. Since there is a samovar (hot water dispenser) in every carriage, your best bet is to have a stack of dried noodle soups and Nescafe ready. Just bring your own cup. In Carriage attendants also sell tea and coffee.
All tickets for long journeys trains are for sleeping places. Trains between Moscow and St Petersburg have seating places.
Note that there is no shower in the train. Even in the 1st class on K19 (Trans-Manchurian).

Safety on the Trans Siberian

The journey on the Moscow-Irkutsk route (train Moscow-Vladivostok) seems to be very safe, especially if you travel in group of four (or multiples); then you will get a separate four-bed cabin. Every train car has one or two staff that checks tickets, does the cleaning & takes care of boiling water, etc.
Cabins can be locked from the inside with two locks. One can be opened from outside with a special key, the other cannot be opened from outside, and when locked allows the door to open no more than 5 cm (2 inches).

HONG KONG

Hong Kong is a place with multiple personalities, as a result of being Cantonese with a long-time British influence and increasingly more Chinese connections. Perhaps the hallmark of this city is the frenzied vibrancy and the world-class cuisine.
On the surface, it's an urban landscape without the charm of what one would consider "China", and it offers the same upscale shopping malls and boutiques found in other world cities. But step beyond the air conditioned malls, and you'll find a tremendous variety of sights and sounds packed together, from the Chinese markets of Mong Kok, the bars and restaurants of Lan Kwai Fong, beaches in Stanley and Repulse Bay to beautiful greenery and hiking trails in the Country Parks of the New Territories.
The city is also known for its incredible efficiency as a result of its convenient transport, quick customer service and fast pace.

Regions of Hong Kong

Hong Kong Island was the site of the original British settlement.

  • The Northern part of the Island is densely populated. Because of the scarcity of land supply, you'll find most of Hong Kong's skyscrapers and the famous skyline along the northern coastline. The main business and nightlife districts, in addition to the government offices, can be found here.
  • The southern part of the Island has more leisure facilities, with beautiful beaches and luxury residential complexes.
  • Kowloon is the peninsula jutting down towards Hong Kong Island. It is the most populous area in Hong Kong, at one time the most densely populated place in the world.
  • The New Territories, named by the British officials when leased from the Chinese government in 1898, are Hong Kong's residential hinterland.
  • The Outlying Islands are the 234 other islands in the territory ranging from Lantau (twice the size of Hong Kong Island) to rocks poking out of the sea. Situated on Lantau is Discovery Bay a resort type residential area and home to approximately 40000 inhabitants, many of them expats or middle class locals.

History of Hong Kong

In January 1841, as a result of the defeat of the Qing Dynasty of China in the First Opium War, Hong Kong became a British colony, under the Convention of Chuen Pi. After the defeat of China in the Second Opium War, the Kowloon Peninsula was ceded to Britain in 1860. In 1898, the New Territories — a rural area north of Boundary Street in Kowloon district — were leased to Britain for 99 years.
In 1984, the Chinese and British Governments signed the Joint Declaration on the Question of Hong Kong, giving Hong Kong back to China on 1 July 1997. Hong Kong became a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the Peoples Republic of China. Under the slogan "One Country, Two Systems", Hong Kong remains a capitalist economy without various restrictions that apply in mainland China such as news censorship and foreign exchange controls.

Climate of Hong Kong

Hong Kong can be a little chilly in the winter (10 degrees Celsius) and hot and humid in the summer. The best times of year to visit are late spring (March-April), when the average temperature is around 25°C and autumn between (September-November). Typhoons usually occur between June and September.

Festivals in Hong Kong

  • Chinese (Lunar) New Year - Although this may seem like an ideal time to go to Hong Kong, many shops and restaurants close down during the Chinese New Year. Spring Lantern Festival - If you go to Victoria Park of Hong Kong Island, you will have a great excursion of this tradition Chinese festival. A great deal of beautiful lanterns can be found.
  • Ching Ming Festival - This festival in Spring is also known as grave sweeping day. As a tradition, members of the Chinese family go to the grave of their ancestors sweep away the leaves and remove weeds around the grave area, with a view to showing respect to the deceased. Paper offerings are also burned including fake money.
  • Cheung Chau Bun Festival - This is found on the tiny island of Cheung Chau. In the past the festival has involved competitions with people climbing Bun Towers to snatch buns. After the accidental collapse of a bun tower in 1978 due to an overload of people, the competition was abandoned. It was resumed again in 2005 with new safety measures.
  • Tuen Ng Festival - This is a festival in memory of a national hero.
  • Mid Autumn Festival - This festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month. Moon cakes are eaten, which contain lotus seed paste and duck egg yolks. Many western people will find the traditional mooncake hard to appreciate, so you might like to try the ice-cream version as well. The festival is also known as the lantern festival and various parts of Hong Kong will be festooned with decorative lanterns, which set the night scene ablaze with colour.
  • Chung Yeung Festival - Is a day also known as Autumn Remembrance, which is similar to Ching Ming in spring, where families visit the graves of their ancestors to perform cleansing rites and pay their respects. As the weather cools down during this part of the year, hiking is a good activity to do during this holiday.
  • Christmas - Christmas is celebrated Hong Kong style. The city is adorned using traditional western Christmas decorations, including a large artificial tree in Central and plenty of opportunities for children to meet Santa in the shopping centres. Sometimes Christmas is referred to as Winter Fest' and is probably more commercialised than in most countries.

Travel to Hong Kong

Hong Kong retains control of its own immigration. The good side of this is that, unlike mainland China, most Western visitors do not need to obtain visas in advance, but the bad side is that a separate visa is required to enter mainland China from Hong Kong. Detailed visa requirements are available from the Immigration Department.
  • By plane - Internationally, the the modern Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA or HKG) is also known as Chek Lap Kok, the name of the small island it was built over. The architect for the impressive airport terminal was Sir Norman Foster. This modern and efficient building opened in July 1998, and Skytrax has since named it the Best Airport worldwide for five years.
  • Airport Express - Unlike car travel, the Airport Express is a fast and environmentally friendly form of passenger transport to and from the airport. The clean and efficient train speeds you on a journey that takes only 23 minutes, and there are plenty of baggage handling officers to help you get heavy bags on and off of the train. Each way costs $60-$100, or a round trip for $110-$180, depending on the distance travelled.
  • Taxi - A taxi from the airport to the city will cost you around $300 depending on your exact destination. If you have 3 or more people travelling together, it is generally cheaper to travel by taxi than by Airport Express, but you may have a problem fitting so many bags into the taxi. Use the taxi with red body for destinations to Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, Green taxi is restricted to New Territories and Blue Taxi for Lantau Island
  • By outbound ferry - Hong Kong is only a 1 hour hydrofoil ride away from Macau, and there is good connectivity to mainland China as well.
  • By land - There are 5 checkpoints on the Hong Kong - Shenzhen boundary, namely Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau, Man Kam To, Sha Tau Kok and Shenzhen Bay.
  • By bicycle - Cycling across the border is possible at the four land crossings with Shenzhen, with Lo Wu probably the easiest to deal with. You can also take your bike across on the ferries, but cycling to or from the international airport is difficult to impossible.
  • By train - Kowloon Canton Railway runs regular Through Train service between Guangdong Province, Beijing and Shanghai. The through train terminus is Hung Hom Station on the Kowloon side, while the current terminus of the domestic service is East Tsim Sha Tsui station.

Getting around Hong Kong

Hong Kong's public transport system is highly developed, to the point where often the hardest part is choosing your means of transport.

  • By subway/underground railway - Hong Kong's Mass Transit Railway (MTR) underground network is the fastest way to get around the city, but what you gain in speed you lose in views and (at least for short distances) price.
  • By train - The Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR) connects Kowloon to Canton (Guangdong) in mainland China, but is also an important commuter line.
  • By tram - Operated by Hong Kong Tramways, the narrow double-decker city trams trundling on the north coast of Hong Kong Island are a Hong Kong icon. Trams are slower but the route along the length of Hong Kong Island's centre is useful and with a flat fare of only $2, they're the cheapest sightseeing tour around.
  • By ferry - A vast fleet of ferries plies between the many islands of Hong Kong.
  • By taxi - Taxicabs are plentiful, clean and efficient. They were just recently rated as the cheapest of all big cities in the world. Not good news for the drivers, but good for the tourist!

Currency in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong dollar is the official currency.

Shopping in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is still known as an excellent destination for shopping, especially of goods from the Mainland. Prices are comparably cheaper than Europe, North America, or Japan, especially since Hong Kong has no sales tax (VAT). As a generalisation, Hong Kong Island and nearby Tsim Sha Tsiu have the upmarket shopping malls, while Kowloon is the place to go for cheap open markets. For cheaper goods, some Hong Kong residents shop in Shenzhen just across the border into China.

Many stores in Hong Kong (even some chain stores) are willing to negotiate on price, particularly for goods such as consumer electronics. Always feel free to ask "is there any discount?" and "do I get any free gift?" when buying anything in the territory. You can often get an additional discount if you pay cash (since the store can avoid paying the credit card charges).

Things to see and do in Hong Kong

  • The skyline of Hong Kong is one of the best in the world. See the stunning Hong Kong Island skyline from Kowloon.
  • Victoria Peak - Get a stunning view of Hong Kong Island on the Victoria Peak with the giant, Wok shaped Peak Tower. The Peak Tram runs from Central to the bottom of the Peak Tower.
  • Horse Racing - The racing season runs from September to June
  • Hong Kong Disneyland is on Lantau Island.
  • Ocean Park is on the southern side of Hong Kong Island.

There are many traditional heritage locations throughout the territory.

  • Ping Shan Heritage Trail in Tin Shui Wai, New Territories
  • Kowloon Walled City Park in Kowloon City, Kowloon
  • Hong Kong Heritage Museum in Shatin, New Territories
  • Tsang Tai Uk in the New Territories
  • Che Kung Temple in the Sha Tin, New Territories
  • Man Mo Temple and Fu Shin Street Traditional Bazaar in the New Territories
  • Temple of Ten Thousand Buddha's - Located 5 minute walk from Shatin KCR station. This is one of the best temples to visit in Hong Kong. There are over 12,000 buddha and you can usually see monkeys. There is also a pagoda that you can climb.
  • Po Lin Monastery and the Tien Tan Buddha Statue on Ngong Ping,

Nature and Hiking

  • Lantau Island - open countryside, traditional fishing villages, secluded beaches, monasteries and more. You can hike, camp, fish and mountain bike, amongst other activities.
  • Sai Kung - its hilly geographic features and different kind of landforms are ideal if you like challenging routes. Sharp peak is famous for its steep slope with a height more than 400m. The view from the top is fantastic.
  • Hong Kong Wetland Park is a relaxing park set amidst an ecological mitigation area.
  • Hong Kong Tourism Board offers many free walking tours, including Nature Kaleidoscope Walk and Architecture Walk.
Hiking is the best-kept secret in Hong Kong, a great way to appreciate Hong Kong's beautiful sceneries range from mountains to beaches to breathtaking cityscape. Hiking in Hong Kong is strenuous however, with steep trails, the mosquitos and the hot, humid weather combining to make even the easiest trek a workout. There are four major trails in Hong Kong:
  • Lantau Trail on Lantau.
  • Hong Kong Trail on Hong Kong Island.
  • Maclehose Trail through the New Territories.
  • Wilson Trail starting on Hong Kong Island and finishing on the New Territories

Beaches

  • Repulse Bay - is a large urban beach on the south side of Hong Kong Island.
  • Middle Bay - is popular with gay people and is a 20-minute walk from the crowds at Repulse Bay.
  • Shek O - is a beach popular with many Hong Kong people.
  • Big Wave Bay - This beach is smaller than others on Hong Kong Island and has the sort of waves that appeal to surfers.

Respect in Hong Kong

Westerners say Hong Kong can be a pretty rude city with the large crowds, pushing, shoving, and crowdedness — similar to New York City or London. It is better described, as hurried and efficient, but not mean spirited. Manners are very important to local people. However, their ideas of manners can be different to Western ideas, this is especially obvious when it comes to table manners.
Hong Kong has been known to be pretty conservative, but women wearing sleeveless tops, halter necks, miniskirts and hot pants can be easily spotted; and bikinis have become women's favourite at the beach. Public nudity is illegal, so don't try to go topless on the beach.

MACAU

Macau is a territory located in southeast China, and was until 1999 administered by Portugal as an overseas province. Like its formerly British neighbour Hong Kong, Macau is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.

Regions of Macau

Macau is geographically divided into three main regions: a peninsula and two islands.

  • The Macau Peninsula is the northernmost region, connecting to the Chinese mainland. It is the center of most tourist activity and is densely crowded.
  • Taipa is an island to the south of the peninsula, accessible via three bridges. It is a major residential center and is the location of Macau's International Airport.
  • Coloane is an island further to the south. It is considerably less developed than the other regions, with two beaches, several hiking trails and a resort. It is also the location of Macau's only golf course, though a second one is being built on the Cotai landfill.

Cotai can be considered a fourth region. It is an area of reclaimed land joining Taipa and Coloane, making them essentially into a single island. Massive development of casinos, a golf course and other facilities is continuing. This area is being billed as the Las Vegas Strip of the East, and is locally referred to as the Cotai Strip

History of Macau

In the 16th Century China gave Portugal the right to establish a colony on Macau in exchange for clearing the area of pirates. Macau was the first European settlement in the Far East. It was also the last, when an agreement was signed by China and Portugal in 1987. Macau then became the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 20 December 1999, ending over 400 years of Portuguese administration.
China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be practiced in Macau and that Macau will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defence affairs. Like the Hong Kong SAR, Macau has its own government, passports, visas, postal system and currency.

Travel to Macau

A few years back, the usual way to get to Macau was to fly into Hong Kong and take the ferry across to Macau. Today, Macau is becoming a low-cost airline hub. For most passports, you do not need to get a Macau visa in advance. 30-day tourist visas are routinely issued at all border-crossing points.
  • By boat - Ferries from Hong Kong arrive 24 hours a day (every 15-30 minutes by day and every hour at night) at Macau Maritime Ferry Terminal on the Outer Harbour beside the Sands Casino.
  • By air - Macau International Airport (MFM) is off the shore of Taipa Island. Because of its low fees, it has been able to attract several low-cost airlines to serve Macau (whereas not a single one flies to neighbouring Hong Kong).
  • By car - You can enter by road from Gongbei, Zhuhai if your vehicle (cars only, no motorcycles) has both Macau and China number plates and the driver carries both Macau and China driver's licenses. Note that you have to switch sides of the road; China drives on the right, Macau on the left.
  • By bus - A Chinese visa is required. You shouldn't take the bus to enter or leave Macau without your visa.

Getting around Macau is relatively easy. With an area of only a few square kilometres, peninsular Macau is navigable by foot. There are of course buses and taxis as well.

Things to see Macau

  • The ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral are the city's most famous landmark.
  • Above Saint Paul's are the remains of a fort, now the city's main museum. You can buy a pass that gets you into all Macau museums, cheaper than the individual admission fees if you want to see several.
  • Largo do Senado (Senate Square) is a colourful typical Iberian town square at the heart of the city. On the hill between Largo Do Senado and St. Paul's is a church with an incredible interior.
  • The A-Ma Temple is perhaps the most famous Chinese temple in Macau. It's near the southern tip of the peninsula, on the west side.
  • Opposite the A-Ma Temple is the Maritime Museum, with exhibits on Macau's seafaring history.
  • The Wine Museum and the Grand Prix Museum are both in the same building, north of the centre of town.
  • From the Macau Tower you have a great view over Macau and Taipa.
  • The East India Company Cemetery (also known as the Old Protestant Cemetery) is a lovely little piece of England in Macau. Look out for the grave of the Right Honourable Lord H.I. Spencer Churchill, ancestor of Winston Churchill, and also for the grave of the painter George Chinnery.
  • The Cemeterio de São Miguel Arcanjo (Saint Michael the Archangel Cemetery), a classic example of Sino-Portuguese Culture. A great place for lovers of angel statues.
  • The Kun Iam Tong is a large, old Buddhist temple to the north of downtown.
  • Rua da Felicidade (Happiness Street), the old red light district. Today it is a fairly interesting shopping street with various antiques and handicrafts.
  • Jardim de Lou Lim Ioc is a beautiful garden sanctuary on the main island of Macau. It contains lovely green plants and a temple.

Things to do in Macau

  • Go Karting - There is a go-kart track on the southern end of Cotai.
  • At the Macau Tower is a 338.8m tall building. There's a mast climb that takes you to the very top of the tower; a jump off the side of the tower from 233m above ground with a rope attached to your back; a walk around the handrail-less rim of the tower; as well as abseiling at the tower's base. The Macau Tower has the highest skyjump in the world.
  • Macau has two beaches on the southern side of Coloane island that are frequented by locals and visitors, especially at the weekend: Hac Sa (black sand) beach, the larger of the two, in a bay with the Westin resort on its eastern end
Cheoc Van (bamboo bay) beach, a smaller and more beautiful beach. The sand here is golden and more inviting to sunbathe or play on.
  • Go Hiking/Cycling - The two Taipa Hills are suitable for hiking and cycling. The larger hill, on the east side of the island right next to the airport, has several unpaved hiking trails that can also be used for mountain biking. The smaller hill, on the west side of the island, has a low-traffic paved road circling it, which is suitable for cycling and running.
  • At the Macau Dome in Cotai area is a bowling centre of international standard. There are 24 lanes, the first four of which may be used by children, as these lanes are equipped with raised borders.

Gambling in Macau

Gambling is Macau's biggest industry, and busloads arrive daily from mainland China to try their luck. Most casinos are along the waterfront on the southern side of Macau peninsula. For many years, the Casino Lisboa was the most famous and a landmark well known to people outside Macau, but it is being eclipsed by Sands Casino, which opened in 2004. With the grand opening in the last week of August 2007, the Venetian is touted as the Asia's largest casino.
Gamblers are required to be at least 18 years of age to be allowed to play.

North of the Lisboa is a strip with many smaller casinos, a number of hotels and bars, and quite a few restaurants. However, parts of it are also fairly sleazy, with lots of hookers and touts, so some caution is in order.

Currency in Macau

The currency of Macau is the pataca, which is divided into 100 avos. There are about 8 patacas to the US dollar.
Hong Kong dollars, which are almost equal to the pataca in value, are accepted by most businesses on a 1:1 basis. Chinese Yuan (RMB/CNY) is also frequently accepted and can easily be changed for either Hong Kong dollars or patacas.

TAIWAN

Taiwan is an island nation of about 36,000 square kilometres located off the coast of southeastern China, southwest of Okinawa and north of the Philippines. The island is governed by the Republic of China or ROC. Taiwan is known for steep mountains and lush forests.

Regions of Taiwan

  • Taiwan can be divided into five regions:
  • Central Taiwan — This region includes the Central Mountains, central western coastal area, scenic Sun Moon Lake and Taichung city.
  • Eastern Taiwan — This area, cut off from the rest of the island by mountains, contains Taiwan's most striking natural scenery, including the famous Taroko Gorge
  • Northern Taiwan — the capital, Taipei, and the high-tech hub, Hsinchu, are located in this region, as well as the Yangmingshan National Park.
  • Southern Taiwan — This area is more tropical than the rest of the island, with many beaches and coconut palms.
  • The Outlying Islands — Green Island, Kinmen (Quemoy), Matsu, Orchid Island and Penghu.

Climate in Taiwan

Taiwan has a marine tropical climate, meaning cool winters (15°C) and sweltering, humid summers (above 30°C) from June to September.

Travel to Taiwan

Citizens of many countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, as well as the United Kingdom, Ireland and most other EU members, may enter Taiwan visa-free for thirty days or more provided that their passports do not expire within six months.
  • By plane - There are international flights into Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (formerly called Chiang Kai-Shek (CKS) International Airport) in Taoyuan, and to a lesser extent, to the Kaohsiung International Airport.
  • By boat - There are bi-weekly passenger ferry links between Japan and Taiwan.

Getting around Taiwan

  • By plane - There are four domestic airlines, all of which have business-sized planes and get across Taiwan quite quickly. Flights are frequent, and it is usually unnecessary to book flights in advance.
  • By train - Taiwan's train system is excellent, with stops in all major cities. Train stations are often located in the centres of most cities and towns and serve as a convenient hub for most types of transportation.
  • By bus - Buses that run between cities and are called keyun, as opposed to gongche, which run within the county and city. In major cities, bus transportation is extensive.
  • By metro - Taipei has an excellent, fairly comprehensive subway system that makes travelling around the city easy.
  • By scooter or motorcycle - Scooters with an engine size of 50cc require a license to drive, and should be insured and registered in the owner's name. It should be possible to rent a scooter by the day or week, depending on the city in which you're staying. Another option is to rent a motorcycle.
  • By car - An international driving license is required for driving in Taiwan and may be used for up to 30 days, after which you'll need to apply for a local permit. The highways are in excellent shape with toll stations around every 30 km. Prepaid tickets may be purchased at most convenience stores, allowing faster passage and eliminating the need to count out exact change while driving.

Things to do and see in Taiwan

  • Alishan - misty forests of giant cypresses and amazing sunrises at the centre of the island, reached by a scenic narrow-gauge train
  • Kenting National Park - located at the extreme southern tip of the island, this park is famous for its beaches and lush vegetation.
  • Shei-pa National Park - a park spanning mountains and rivers located in Hsinchu County - great hiking trails
  • Sun Moon Lake - nestled at 2,500 feet in lofty mountains in Nantou County, this lake is famous for its clear sparkling blue water and picturesque mountain backdrop.
  • Taipingshan - a historic logging area and one of Taiwan's most scenic spots.
  • Taroko Gorge - an impressive gorge located off the east coast
  • Yangmingshan National Park - spanning a mountain range overlooking Taipei
  • Buddha's Birthday - Colourful but simple ceremonies are held at Buddhist monasteries that generally consist of washing a statue of the Buddha and a vegetarian feast. It is appropriate to make offerings to the monks and nuns at this time, though it is not mandatory.
  • Dragon Boat Festival - A festival to commemorate the death of the Chinese patriotic poet Qu Yuan (born 340 BC), who drowned himself in a river out of despair that his beloved country, Chu, was being plundered by a neighbouring country as a result of betrayal by his own people. The festival falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month and is marked by races of colorful dragon boats at various locations throughout the island.
  • Hot Springs - Taiwan's geographical location between an oceanic trench and volcanic system makes it an ideal hot springs vacation spot. There are several hot springs destinations throughout the country, including Wulai and Yangmingshan.
  • Learn a martial art
Currency in Taiwan

The currency of Taiwan is the New Taiwan Dollar (NTD, but also referred to as TWD), known locally as NT.

Shopping in Taiwan

As in many Asian countries, night markets are a staple of Taiwanese entertainment, shopping and eating. Night markets are open-air markets, usually on a street or alleyway, with vendors selling all sorts of wares on every side. Many bargains can be had, and wherever prices are not displayed, haggling is expected. In the larger cities you will have a night market every night and in the same place. In smaller cities, they are only open certain nights of the week, and may move to different streets depending on the day of the week.

Culture and Respect in Taiwan

  • Do not stick your chopsticks straight up or even sticking into your bowl of rice. This is reminiscent of incense sticks at a temple, and has connotations of wishing death upon those around you. When putting down chopsticks, either place them on the provided porcelain chopstick rest or rest the chopsticks across the top of your bowl.
  • Do not write people's names in red. This again has connotations of death. When writing someone
