INDIA

India is the largest country in the Subcontinent and shares borders with Pakistan to the west, China and Nepal to the north, Bhutan to the northeast, and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Indonesia lie to the southeast in the Indian Ocean. It is the seventh largest country in the world by area and, with over a billion people, comes a close second to China in population. It's an extremely diverse country, with vast differences in geography, climate, culture, language and ethnicity across its expanse, and prides itself on being the largest democracy on Earth.

Regions of India

India is divided into 28 states and 7 union territories. These states and union territories are grouped by convention into the following regions.
  • Himalayan North — Mountainous and beautiful, a tourist destination for the adventurous and the spiritual. This region contains some of India's most visited hill-stations and religious places. Also includes the troubled state of Jammu and Kashmir
  • The Plains — India's Hindi-speaking heartland. The country's capital New Delhi is here. The rivers Ganga and Yamuna flow through this plain. Many of the events that shaped India's history took place in this region.
  • Western India — miles and miles of the Thar Desert. Home to the the colourful cities of Rajasthan - Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Bikaner, Goa, as well as the country's most vibrant and biggest Indian city Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay), wonderful beaches and Bollywood (Indian film industry in Bombay)
  • Southern India — a strong bastion of indigenous culture, South India features famous and historical temples, tropical forests, backwaters in Kerala, beautiful hill stations in Tamil Nadu, beaches and cosmopolitan cities in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and wonderful lush islands.
  • Eastern India — India's mostly rural region, its largest city is Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta), the temple cities of Puri of Lord Jagannath fame and Bhubaneswar are both in Orissa.
  • Northeastern India — remote and sensitive, the country's tribal corner, with beautiful landscapes and famous for Tea Gardens. Consists of seven tiny states (by Indian standards, some of them are larger than Switzerland or Austria) popularly nicknamed as The Seven Sisters.

History of India

Indians date their history from the Vedic Period. This is the period when the Vedas, the oldest and holiest books of Hinduism, were compiled. The earliest archaeological traces are from archaeological findings of 7000 BC .The excavations reveal an extremely advanced urban civilization, with no evidence of weapons or fortifications. The Vedic civilization influences India and its roots of present-day Hinduism to this day with. In the 1st millennium BC, various schools in philosophy developed, enriching Hinduism greatly. Most of them claimed to derive from the Vedas. However, two of these schools - Buddhism and Jainism - questioned the authority of the Vedas and they are now recognized as separate religions.

Many great empires were formed between 500 BC and AD 500. Notable among them were the Mauryas and the Guptas (called the Golden Age). This period saw a gradual decline of Buddhism and Jainism. The practice of Buddhism, in particular, disappeared from the Indian mainland, though Buddha himself was incorporated into the Hindu pantheon. Jainism continues to be practised by a significant number who are ambivalent about whether they consider themselves Hindus or not.
Islamic incursions started in the 8th century in the form of raids and soon much of North India was taken over by Islamic rulers. The Rajput and Mughal period of North India was the golden age for Indian art, architecture, and literature. It produced the monumental gems of Rajasthan, and the most famous monument of all, Taj Mahal. Two languages, Hindi and Urdu, took root in medieval North India. During the Islamic period, some Hindus also converted to Islam, either by force, or to escape the low social status that the caste system imposed on them, or to gain the benefits of being aligned with the then rulers.
South India followed a different trajectory, being less affected by the Islamic invasion. The period from 500 AD to 1600 AD is called the classical period dominated by great South Indian kingdoms.

European traders started visiting India in the late 16th century. By the 19th century, the British East India Company had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. There was an uprising by Indian rulers in 1857, which was suppressed, which prompted the British government to make India a part of the empire. Many Indians converted to Christianity during the period, for pretty much the same reasons as they converted to Islam although forcible conversions ended in British India after 1857. The British Government took over from the East India Company, and Queen Victoria promised to respect religious faiths of Indians.

Free India under Nehru adopted a democratically governed, centrally planned economy. These policies were aimed at attaining "self-sufficiency", and to a large extent made India what it is today. India achieved self-sufficiency in food grains by the 1970s, ensuring that the large-scale famines that had been common are now history. However these policies also led to shortages, slow growth and large-scale corruption.

Climate in India

In India, it rains only during a specific time of the year. This is known as "Monsoon" season. There are two: the Southwest and the Northeast, both named after the directions the winds come from. The Southwest monsoon lasts from June to September. The Northeast monsoon hits the east coast between October and February, mostly in the form of occasional cyclones, which cause much devastation every year.
India experiences at least three seasons a year, Summer, Rainy Season (or "Monsoon") and Winter, though in the tropical South calling the 25°C (77°F) weather "Winter" would be stretching the concept.

Travel to India

Citizens of most countries with a few exceptions like Bhutan and Nepal need a visa to get in. It's wise to ask for a multiple entry visa even if you aren't planning to use it - they cost the same, are handed out pretty liberally and come in handy if you decide last minute to dip into one of the neighbouring countries.
  • By plane - The major points of entry are Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata.
  • By boat - India has several international ports on its peninsula. Mumbai and Chennai are the main ones handling passenger traffic, while the rest mainly handle cargo.
  • By train - There are two links from Pakistan. The Samjhauta Express and the Thar Express. Neither train is the fastest or the most practical way to go between India and Pakistan due to the long delay to clear customs and immigration (although the trains are sights in their own right and make for a fascinating trip).
  • By road - From Pakistan the only land crossing is from Lahore to Amritsar via the Attari/Wagah border crossing. Buses from Nepal, cross the border daily, usually with connections to New Delhi, Lucknow, and Varanasi. However, it's cheaper and more reliable to take one bus to the border crossing and another from there on. From Bhutan, the Royal Bhutanese Government runs a bus service to/from Phuentsholing. From Bangladesh, there are a number of land entry points to India.

Getting around India

  • By plane : India's large size and poor roads make flying a viable option. The earlier you book, the lower you pay. You can book flights online from the airline's website (most airlines have one now). It is sometimes more convenient to get tickets from the ticket agents though that will be more expensive.
  • By train : India boasts the biggest network of railway lines in the world, and the rail system is efficient, if not always on schedule. With classes ranging from luxurious to regular, it's the best way to get to know the country and its people. You will get to see the beautiful Indian countryside first hand, and most train passengers will be curious about you and happy to pass the time with a chat. 1st Class A/C (AC1) is the one you'd choose if you think it is more important to savour the journey than to actually get there. It is usually more expensive than air travel. 3-tier (AC3) and 2-tier A/C (AC2) are good choices for longer journeys. The difference between the two is not major - in the former berths to sleep in are arranged in three tiers, while in the latter they are arranged in two. Most trains will have both the classes. A/C Chair Class (CC) offers air-conditioned seating. Sleeper Class (SL) is non-A/C, and is the staple transport of backpackers travelling in India.
  • By bus : While you can't take a cross-country bus-ride across India, buses are the second most popular way of travelling across states and the only cheap way of reaching many places that the rail network does not reach.
  • By car : In India driving is on the left of the road — at least most of the time.
  • By auto-rickshaw : The auto-rickshaw, sometimes abbreviated as "auto" and sometimes as "rickshaw", is the most common means of hired transportation in India. When getting an auto-rickshaw, you can either negotiate the fare or go by the meter. In almost all cases it is better to use the meter - a negotiated fare means that you are being charged a higher than normal rate.

National Holidays in India

There are three national holidays (Republic Day, Independence Day, and Gandhi Jayanti), which occur on the same day every year. Most other religious holidays occur on different days, because the Hindu and Islamic festivals are based on their respective calendars and not on the Gregorian calendar.
  • January 26 — Republic Day. Celebrates the adoption of the constitution and the day India became a republic. Big military parades in major cities.
  • August 15 — Independence Day - Celebrates the birth of independent India
  • October 2 — Gandhi Jayanti - birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.

The following vary from year to year (dates given are for 2007).

  • March 19 — Ugadi/Gudi Padwa. New year according to the Hindu lunar calendar.
  • March 27 — Ram Navami. Birthday of Lord Rama.
  • April 14 — New Year per Hindu Solar calendar.
  • May 1 — Martyr's Day / Labour Day.
  • May 2 — Buddha Purnima, birthday of Buddha.
  • August 28 — Raksha Bandhan. Sisters tie the rakhi or the sacred thread of love on their brothers' wrists and the brothers give gifts and promises of protection in return. Holiday in Northern India.
  • September 3 — Krishna Janmashtami/Gokulashtami - Celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna
  • September 15 — Vinayaka (Ganesha) Chathurthi - Celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha.
  • November 9 — Deepawali (or Diwali) - Festival of lights, celebrates the return of Lord Rama to the capital of his kingdom, Ayodhya after an exile of 14 years. Probably the most lavish festival in the country.

Currency in India

The currency in India is the Indian rupee. In the big cities, credit cards are accepted at retail chain stores and other westernised restaurants and stores. Small businesses and family-run stores almost never accept credit cards, so it is useful to keep a moderate amount of cash on hand.

Shopping in India

In India you are expected to negotiate the price. If not, you risk overpaying many times - which can be okay if you think "well, it's cheaper than home". The harder you bargain the more you save money. A few tries later you will realise that it is fun. Often, the more time you spend in a store, the better deals you will get. It is worth spending time getting to know the owner, asking questions, and once the owner feels that he is making a sufficient profit from you, he will often give you additional goods at a rate close to his cost, rather than the common "foreigner rate". You will get better prices and service by buying many items in one store than by bargaining in multiple stores individually.

Etiquette in India

In India eating with your hand (instead of utensils like forks and spoons) is very common. There's one basic rule of etiquette to observe: Use only your right hand. However eating by hand is frowned on in some "classier" places. If you are provided with cutlery and everybody else around you seems to be doing it, then take the hint.
Drinking alcohol can either be frowned upon or openly accepted, depending on the region and religion of the area within which you are drinking.
Cannabis in its many forms — especially ganja (weed) and charas (hash) — is widely available throughout India, but they are all illegal in the vast majority of the country. Attitudes to enforcement vary greatly from state to state, but the letter of the law is harsh indeed and simple possession may mean years in jail.

Safety in India

As a rule India is quite safe for foreigners. Unfortunately theft is quite common in places visited by tourists, but violent thefts hardly ever occur. More likely a thief will pick your pocket or break into your room. There is little culture of muggings in India.
India is a conservative country and some western habits are perceived as dishonourable for a woman in this culture.
Outside of the larger cities, it is unusual for people of the opposite sex to touch each other in public. Even couples (married or otherwise) refrain from public displays of affection. Except in major cities women do not smoke.
People are fully clothed even at the beach. So, be sure to find out what the appropriate attire is for the beach you are visiting. Street parties for holidays are usually devoid of women but filled with crowds of inebriated men partying. During festivals such as Holi, New Year's Eve, and even Christmas Eve, women can be subjected to groping and sexually aggressive behaviour from these crowds. It is unsafe for women to attend these festivities alone.
Dressing in traditional Indian clothes, such as salwaar kameez (comfortable and good in) or sari (more formal and difficult to wear) will earn Western women more respect in the eyes of locals.

Respect in India

In mosques and temples it is obligatory to take off your shoes. It may also be customary to take off your footwear while entering into homes, follow other people's lead.

It is disrespectful to touch or point at people with your feet.

Any give or take of anything important should be done with the right hand only, or with the right hand supported with the left. This includes giving and taking of presents, and any transfer of a large amount of money.

Travellers should be aware of the fact that Indians generally dress conservatively and should do the same. Shorts, short skirts (knee-length or above) and sleeveless shirts are not appropriate.

NEPAL

Nepal is a landlocked country in Southern Asia, between China and India. It contains eight of the world's 10 highest peaks, including Mount Everest.

Regions of Nepal

Nepal is divided into five development regions, from east to west:

  • Eastern Nepal – Everest region, Arun valley, Kanchenjunga, Ilam.
  • Central Nepal – Kathmandu and Langtang region.
  • Western Nepal – Pokhara and the Annapurna region
  • Mid Western Nepal – Dhaulagiri Himalaya, Dolpa, inner Terai valleys and Jumla.
  • Far Western Nepal – Mahakali River.

Cities of Nepal

  • Kathmandu – capital and cultural centre of Nepal
  • Bhaktapur – well-preserved historical city, centre of Nepali pottery making.
  • Biratnagar – this city is in eastern Nepal near Dharan and famous for political reason.
  • Birgunj – business gateway between India and Nepal.
  • Dharan – lovely city in eastern Nepal
  • Namche Bazaar – a Sherpa settlement located in the Solo Khumbu region - popular with trekkers
  • Nepalgunj – the main hub for the Mid- and Far-Western Development Region. Bardiya National Park is close-by
  • Patan – sister-city of Kathmandu and metal working center
  • Pokhara – picturesque lakeshore town and base for many of Nepal's most accessible treks

Climate in Nepal

Nepal has a Monsoonal climate with four main seasons.

  • June to September - Heavy monsoonal rains.
  • October to December - Clear and cool weather after the monsoon, there is little dust in the air so this is the best season to 'experience' the mountains.
  • January to March - Cold with the temperature in Kathmandu often dropping as low as 0°C at night, with extreme cold at high elevations.
  • April to June - Dry and warm weather and there is an abundance of blooming flowers in the Himalayas at this time

Travel to Nepal

  • By plane - Nepal's Tribhuvan International Airport is located just outside Kathmandu. The terminal is a one-room brick building with a large wooden table serving as both customs and immigration. Two-month tourist visas are available on arrival.
  • By bus - There are four border crossings open to Non-South Asians. The Sunauli-Bhairawa border crossing is the closest to Varanasi, the Birganj-Raxaul Bazaar crossing to Kolkata, and Kakarbhitta-Siliguri is to Darjeeling. The Mahendrenagar-Banbassa border crossing in the extreme west of Nepal, is the closest to Delhi, but it makes more sense to take the Bus to Gorakhpur, or Varanasi, and the train from there, as the train is far more comfortable. The crossing between Nepal and Tibet via Kodari is open to independent travellers entering Nepal, but only to organised groups entering Tibet.

Getting around Nepal

  • Local Bus - the cheapest, and most 'interesting' way to go but be prepared for goats, ducks, buffaloes, any other domestic animals your can think of and crowds.
  • Tourist Bus - Book a few days ahead. A few steps above local buses (no goats, everyone gets a seat) but not much safer.
  • Taxis - There are two types of taxi -- "private", which pretty much run from the airport to your hotel; and "10 Rupee", which don't leave until they are full, and you wont believe how full they can get!
  • Motorcycle - Another choice is to rent a motorcycle.
  • On Foot - although motor roads are penetrating further into the hinterlands, many destinations can only be reached by foot (or helicopter).

Elevation Zones in Nepal (south to north)

  • Outer Terai - Level plains, a cultural and linguistic extension of northern India. Lumbini, Buddha's birthplace and Janakpur, Sita's birthplace are in this zone.
  • Siwalik Range or Churia Hills - the outermost and lowest range of foothills.
  • Inner Terai - large valleys between the Siwaliks and higher foothills to the north. The Royal Chitwan National Park is in this zone where tigers, rhinos, crocodiles, deer and birds can be observed.
  • Mahabharat Range - a prominent foothill range continuous across the country from east to west except for narrow transecting canyons.
  • Middle Hills - Valleys north of the Mahabharat Range and 'hills' up to about 2,000m. Trekking through the 'hills' is unremittingly scenic with streams and terraced fields, picturesque villages, a variety of ethnic groups with distinctive costumes, and views of the high Himalayas from high points.
  • Valleys - Kathmandu and to the west Pokhara occupy large valleys. Both valleys offer excellent opportunities to experience Nepal without strenuous trekking.
  • Lekhs - Snow occasionally falls and lasts days or weeks in the winter above 3,000m, but melts away in summer below 5,500m).
  • Himalaya - North of the lekhs, the snowy high Himalayas rise abruptly along a fault zone to peaks over 6,700m. Himalaya means 'abode of snow', which is uninhabited.

Things to see in Nepal

Sacred Sites:

  • Lumbini is the sacred site of the Buddha Shakyamuni's birth.
  • Boudhanath Stupa in Kathmandu.
  • Parping in the Kathmandu Valley is the site of several sacred caves associated with Padmasambhava, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism.
  • Haleshi in Eastern Nepal is the site of a mountain cave where Padmasambhava attained a state beyond life and death.
  • Dakshinkali is a Hindu temple complex south of Kathmandu on the Bagmati River where it enters a gorge through the Mahabharat Range.

Things to do in Nepal

  • Rafting - Overnight trips for all levels of experience leave from Kathmandu and Pokhara. The Kaligandaki is a popular river.
  • Jungle Safari - Royal Chitwan National Park offers elephant rides, jungle canoeing, nature walks, and birding, as well as more adventurous tiger and rhino viewing.
  • Parties - "The Last Resort", near the Tibetan border, has frequent Full Moon Trance Parties, lasting 2-3 days. Watch for posters and check music shops.
  • Massage - "The Healing Hands Centre", in Kathmandu, has monthly five-day, ten-day and one-month Ancient Massage courses.
  • Trekking - Most of the trekking Nepal is called "Tea-House Trekking" as the day's hike is between guesthouse-filled towns. Remote trekking is also possible, but unless you are an experienced wilderness trekker, it is recommended to hire a guide and porters.
  • Everest Base Camp Trek: Stunning scenery, Wonderful people.
  • Annapurna Circuit: A 3-4 week trek around the Annapurna Mountains.
  • Helambu Langtang Trek: Relatively easy Trek from Kathmandu
  • Mera Peak Climbing: Enjoy panoramic views of Mt. Everest (8848m), Cho-Oyu (8201m), Lhotse (8516m), Makalu (8463m), Kangchenjunga (8586m), Nuptse (7855m), Chamlang (7319m).
  • Island Peak Trek: The Island Peak trek in the Everest region takes in some of the most spectacular scenery in the Himalayas.

Safety in Nepal

There are strikes ("bandas") and demonstrations to contend with. During this time, businesses close and transportation halts.
In the countryside, maoist insurgents may not have completely laid down their weapons. People with guns may still be asking for 'donations'. An offer you might not want to refuse. If things start heating up, best get out of the country or at least to a major city like Kathmandu or Pokhara before the shooting starts up again. It is unlikely that tourists would be targeted, but war often means collateral damage. If your country has an embassy or consulate in Nepal, let them know your whereabouts and plans, and at least listen seriously to any cautionary advice they offer.
When trekking carry iodine or other chemical means of treating water and be sure to follow directions. Brush teeth with prepared drinking water and avoid water entering the mouth when showering.
Get vaccinated and consider prophylactic treatment. You may be exposed to typhoid, cholera, hepatitis malaria, and possibly even rabies.
Snakebite - The risk is greatest in warm weather and at elevations below 5,000' (1,500m). Poisonous snakes are fairly common and cause thousands of deaths annually.

Respect in Nepal

  • Greet people with a warm Namaste (or "Namaskar" to an older or high-status person) with palms together, fingers up. Show marked respect to elders. Be friendly, be patient.
  • Feet are considered dirty. Don't point the bottoms of your feet at people, or at religious icons. In this vein, be sure not to step over a person who may be seated or lying on the ground.
  • Be sensitive to when it is proper to remove your hat or shoes.
  • Accept tea.
  • When haggling over prices, smile, laugh, and be friendly. Be prepared to allow a reasonable profit. Don't insult fine craftsmanship, it's much better to lament that you are too poor to afford such princely quality.
  • Being a non-Hindu makes you moderately low caste, but not an untouchable. Avoid touching containers of water; let someone pour it into your drinking container. Likewise avoid touching food that others will be eating. Make sure you are invited before entering someone's house. You may only be welcome on the outer porch, or in the yard.
  • Touch food only with the right hand. The left hand can be used to hold glasses, bowls, and probably eating utensils. Outside the main cities, be prepared to eat rice meals with your (right) hand as Nepalis do, or bring along a fork and spoon.

SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka formerly known as Ceylon, is in Southern Asia. It is an island country in the Indian Ocean, south of India.

History of Sri Lanka

The Sinhalese arrived in Sri Lanka late in the 6th century B.C., from northern India. Buddhism was introduced in the beginning of the mid-3rd century B.C. and a great civilization developed such cities as Anuradhapura (kingdom from c. 200 B.C. to c. 1000 A.D.) and Polonnaruwa (c. 1070 to 1200).
In the 10-11th century, the Cholas, a south Indian dynasty seized power in the north and established a Tamil kingdom. Occupied by the Portuguese in the 16th century and by the Dutch in the 17th century, the island was ceded to the British in 1796 and became a crown colony in 1802. As Ceylon it became independent in 1948; its name was changed in 1972.

Climate in Sri Lanka

Tropical monsoon; northeast monsoon (December to March); southwest monsoon (June to October)

Travel to Sri Lanka

  • By plane - Colombo-Bandaranayake Airport.
  • Tri-Shaws - The most common mode of transport in Sri Lanka is via a three-wheeled automobile appropriately referred to as a three-wheeler. Also known as Tuk-Tuks from the noise of their motors. These operate in a manner similar to taxis, and are a highly cost-efficient way to get around.
  • Buses - For those on a budget buses are everywhere. They're ridiculously crowded and massively uncomfortable, but they get you around for almost nothing.
  • Trains - Trains also run in some places - these can be slower than buses, depending if you are on a line that offers an express train or not, but more comfortable and picturesque.

Things to do and see in Sri Lanka

  • Yala National Park
  • Visit Colombo - the capital city.
  • The city of Kandy - the spiritual heart of the country - is home to a tooth of the Buddha
  • Anuradhapura ruins of ancient capitals (partially restored)
  • Polannaruwa ruins of ancient capitals (partially restored)
  • Sinhala and Tamil New Year Festival - held every year on April 13th that Sinhala and Tamil people celebrate.
  • Esala Perahera is the grand festival of Esala held in Sri Lanka. It is very grand with elegant costumes. Happening in July or August in Kandy, it has become a unique symbol of Sri Lanka. It is a Buddhist festival consisting of dances and richly decorated elephants. There are fire-dances, whip-dances, Kandian dances and various other cultural dances. The elephants are usually adorned with lavish garments. The festival ends with the traditional 'diya-kepeema'.

Safety in Sri Lanka

WARNING: Tensions are rising in Sri Lanka between the government and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam(LTTE) rebels. Check news reports and travel advisories before departing. The area around Koddiyar Bay and the Trincomalee District in the northeast is especially dangerous, with the southern part of the bay effectively a war zone. Travel insurance is strongly recommended. However, violent crime is not a serious problem for tourists in Sri Lanka. The Tamil Tiger (LTTE) rebels do not target tourists. Historically, the Tamils have had a close relationship with the British, and are not anti-Western. It's believed that the Tigers would prefer to have no Western or foreign casualties, and they have planned their operations accordingly.
Do not believe anyone who claims to be a professional (e.g. airline pilot), or in charge of a location (like a bus terminal) without proof.
Vaccinations are recommended for Hepatitis A+B, Polio, Malaria and Tetanus. Also, the Typhus vaccination outside of tourist areas especially in the wet season.
Dengue fever: During the rainy season use mosquito repellent. When head and joint aches occur get a blood check. There is no vaccination yet.

Culture & Respect in Sri Lanka

There are several customs that (for Westerners) take a bit of getting used to.

  • As in many Asian countries, toilet paper is not common - a hose or bucket of water by the side of the toilet is provided as an alternative. If you prefer to use paper, bring your own, but be conscientious about local sewer systems and throw used paper in the trash.
  • It is customary to remove shoes and wear respectful attire (i.e. no miniskirts, tank tops, short pants etc.) when visiting temples. It is also the custom to remove shoes before entering a home.
  • Never touch or pat the top of the head of Buddhists, including children. Assume all strangers could be Buddhists for this purpose.
  • Do not turn your back to (or be alongside) a Buddha statue when within a reasonable distance (observe what others are doing). This includes posing for photos. It's OK to photograph the statues, but all persons should be facing them.
  • Public nudity (including females being topless) is not only unacceptable but illegal in Sri Lanka - though a few German-owned hotels may make an exception in designated areas.
  • Although much latitude is given to tourists, it is more polite to use your right hand when shaking hands, handing money and small objects, etc. Of course you can use both hands for something big and/or heavy.
  • Be respectful to monks. There's no particular etiquette for Westerners - just be polite. Always give them a seat on a crowded bus (unless you're disabled or very elderly). It should also be noted, that women should not touch monks as this causes much offence

PAKISTAN

Pakistan is a country in South Asia. Located along the Arabian Sea, it is surrounded by Afghanistan to the west and northwest, Iran to the southwest, India to the east, and China to the northeast. It is strategically located astride the ancient trade routes of the Khyber and Bolan passes between Asia and Europe.

Regions of Pakistan

  • Azad Kashmir - Pakistan-administered portion of the disputed Kashmir region
  • Balochistan - the largest and most remote province, it's lack of infrastructure can make for rough travelling.
  • Adam Khel - Islamabad Capital Territory
  • Northern Areas - home to some of the world's tallest mountains, it's brimming with dramatically fantastic landscapes and can easily compete with Nepal for trekking opportunities
  • North-West Frontier Province - Home of the rugged Pashtuns, for some it's forbidding and mysterious... yet below the surface are some of the most hospitable people in the country
  • Punjab - the most populous and agriculturally fertile region in the country, and home to many historical shrines and mosques
  • Sindh - most visitors head for Karachi or the ancient ruins of Moenjodaro.
Cities in Pakistan
  • Islamabad - The Federal capital, a relatively new planned city with a much more laidback feel than the rest of the country's cities
  • Karachi - the Financial capital and the largest city of the country, it's an industrial port city and the provincial capital of Sindh
  • Lahore - City of the Mughals, it's a bustling and a very historical city that shouldn't be missed
  • Rawalpindi - Islamabad's much older and busier sister city, it's the starting point for travels to most points in the country
  • Faisalabad - A major city in Punjab, famous for its textile industry
  • Multan - The City of Saints, famous for blue pottery, ornamental glasswork, and Khussa - a type of shoes
  • Muzaffarabad - Capital of Azad Kashmir and the centre of the 2005 earthquake
  • Peshawar - Capital city of the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP), it has a bit of an outlaw edge to it, and is the gateway to the Khyber Pass
  • Quetta - a large, beautiful and slightly unruly city in the southern state of Balochistan, you'll pass through here en route to or from Iran

History of Pakistan

The history of Pakistan traces back to the beginnings of human life in South Asia. Pakistan is home to the Indus Valley civilization, which is amongst the oldest in the world. Prior to the 1900's the area of Pakistan was the area from which the Muslims ruled over Central and Southern Asia for over 300 years. Today Pakistan is made up of people from various races including Arabs from after the Islamic expeditions, Persians from Bukhara and Samarkand, Turks from Central Asia and the Hindus who were converted to Islam.
The official name of Pakistan was used after the partition of (British) India into the 2 states of India and Pakistan in 1947. The once Mughal Empire was divided into the Islamic Republic of Pakistan (with two sections West and East) and largely Hindu, abeit secular India. A third war between these countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan seceding and becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. A dispute over the state of Jammu and Kashmir is ongoing.

Climate in Pakistan

Mostly hot & dry desert in the northwest; arctic in north. Flooding along the Indus after heavy rains (July and August).

Travel to Pakistan

Almost all nationalities require visas, and these are usually easier to obtain in your home country.

  • By plane - Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad are the main gateways to Pakistan by air. Six other international airports are in Peshawar, Quetta, Faisalabad, Turbat, Multan and Gawadar.
  • By train - Pakistan has train links with India and Iran, though none of these trains are the fastest or most practical way to enter Pakistan. Should speed be a priority it is better to take the bus, or if you are really in a hurry fly.
  • By car - From ancient times people have been travelling through Pakistan using the Grand Trunk Road and the Silk Road that run through Pakistan and into the Indian subcontinent. It's a rewarding but time consuming way to see this part of the world.
  • By bus - From India: While there is international service running from Delhi to Lahore it is just as fast, much more flexible, and much cheaper to take the journey by stringing together local transport and crossing the border on foot. From China: You can take a bus from Kashi over the Karakoram Highway to Pakistan.
Getting around Pakistan is quite easy by plane, train, bus and rickshaw.

Foreigners and travellers are exempt from this, but you should still refrain from doing it in public. Ramadan dates: 2008 (1429): Sep 1 - Sep 29 and 2009 (1430): Aug 21 - Sep 19
  • Eid-ul-Fitr - the largest holiday of the year, it celebrates the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Food is the highlight, and if you're lucky you'll be invited into a private home for a feast. Businesses close for at least a couple days if not a week.

Safety in Pakistan

While Pakistan is a fairly stable and welcoming country you should always seek advice about off-limits areas before coming. Stay away from tribal areas and the sensitive Afghan border regions as the Pakistan government has little to no authority in these areas and cannot aid you in an emergency. It's wise to avoid conversation about religion, and if you find yourself in one, be reserved and tactful - saying anything perceived as negative about Islam can cause offence to your hosts.
Visitors are strongly advised to refrain from drinking tap water; many Pakistani locals themselves drink boiled or purified water. Take precautions against malaria, which is spread by mosquitoes.
Some Pakistani dishes can be very spicy! Always notify your host, cook or waiter if you cannot take very spicy food.

Respect in Pakistan

  • Pakistanis pride themselves on their tradition of hospitality to guests. Just a greeting of Salam Alaykum will get you far in endearing yourself to people. If you are travelling outside the big cities like Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad it is advisable to learn some basic Urdu or a regional language.
  • Just respect and observe. Pakistan is a conservative country and it is advisable for women to wear long skirts or pants in public (Pakistani women wear the traditional shalwar kameez). Dress codes for men are more lax, though shorts are uncommon.
  • Never point the soles of your feet or shoes at anyone, as this is considered disrespectful.
  • As with most of South Asia you should use your right hand for eating, shaking hands and giving or receiving everything (including money), and reserve your left hand for handling shoes and assisting in toilet duties.

TIBET

Tibet is an autonomous region of China. Entering Tibet you feel as though you've entered an entirely different world. As much as the Chinese government maintains its policy of cultural assimilation, Tibetans try to preserve their unique heritage.

Regions of Tibet

There are seven prefectures in the Tibet Autonomous Region:

  • Lhasa
  • Qamdo
  • Nagqu
  • Ngari
  • Nyingchi
  • Shannan
  • Xigatse

History of Tibet

In the mid-7th century, Songtsan Gambo established the unified Tubo Dynasty, and married two princesses, one from China and one from India. Tibet and Tang China fought repeatedly for control over the Silk Road during this time. Although the country was unified, it was seldom peaceful and between the 9th century and the mid-17th century it was often embroiled in turmoil. This period finally drew to a close when the Dalai Lama invited a tribe of Mongols to intervene. They gained military control of the region, but decided to stay, with the leader declaring himself king. However, the Dalai Lama actually administered the country.

The British invaded Tibet in 1904, while the Qing emperor carved out states from areas under Tibetan control. With the overthrow of the Qing dynasty in 1911, Tibet regained control of its territory and governed its own affairs, though the British maintained a presence and a certain amount of authority.
In 1950 the People's Liberation Army (PLA) invaded Tibet and the Tibetan government, which was under the leadership of the Dalai Lama. He was forced into exile. Tibet's isolated location did not protect it from the excesses of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), and tens of thousands of Tibetans were killed or imprisoned at the hands of the Red Guards, and its rich cultural heritage lay in ruins.

Travel to Tibet

All foreign visitors to Tibet need one or more permits. Some parts of Tibet also require an Aliens' Travel Permit (ATP), which is issued by the Public Security Bureau (PSB) in major Tibetan cities like Lhasa, Xigatse and Ali. The list of regions that require ATPs changes constantly, so enquire locally. Lhasa's PSB has a poor reputation, while Xigatse and Ali are said to issue permits without any unnecessary difficulties. Some remote areas also require a military permit.
  • By plane - You can fly to Lhasa and also Nyingchi but flying in from a much lower altitude city puts you at high risk of altitude sickness because of the quick transition.
  • By train - The Qinghai-Tibet (Qingzang) Railway from Golmud to Lhasa started operating in July 2006. The journey all the way from Beijing takes just under 48 hours, with travel from cheap hard seat class to a soft sleeper.
  • By road - There are four roads into Tibet. North: The road from Golmud is the easiest legal land route at present. East: There is no legal way to travel this road and the security is tighter than from the north. Travellers do get through this way, but for people who are obviously not northeast Asians it's difficult. West: From Kashgar much of the way is technically off limits. However there is a steady stream of hardy travellers coming this way, usually hitching rides on trucks. The road is totally unpaved for over a thousand kilometres with villages and water few and far between. South: From Nepal the international border makes any sort of breaking of the rules impossible, so the only option is to book a tour with a travel agent in Kathmandu.

Getting around Tibet

  • By Bus - Central Tibet has an OK public bus network; although the strict need for a travel permit when taking a bus (the driver/conductor will want to see it) limits the usefulness of buses.
  • By Jeep - Jeep tours are a popular way of getting around Tibet. Be very precise with your itinerary and very careful with payment. Every stop, monastery and lake you wish to visit, etc should be written on the itinerary. Payment should never be made in advance.
  • Hitchhike - Hitchhiking can be a good way to get around the country for someone who is flexible and has a lot of time. It can, however, mean you end up getting stuck without a lift for days. Hitchhiking in general is not free and a small fee is expected.
  • By Bicycle - There are a surprising number of tourists travelling Tibet by bicycle, both foreigners and Chinese. The roads vary from rough dirt tracks to good quality paved roads.

Things to see and do in Tibet

  • Mount Kailash - a sacred mountain revered by both Tibetan Buddhists and Hindhus.
  • Qomolangma National Nature Reserve
  • Yarlong River National Park
  • The Potala Palace, the home of successive Dalai Lamas is in Lhasa
  • The Jokhang Temple in Lhasa was built in 647 AD by Songtsen Gampo and is one of the holiest sites in Tibet.
  • The 'Summer Palace of the Dalai Lama is located in Lhasa, about 1km south of the Potala.
  • Samye Monastery - constructed in 779AD, Samye was the first Buddhist Monastery established in Tibet, and is located near Dranang, Shannan Prefecture.
  • Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lamas. It was constructed in 1447 and is located in Xigatse

Safety in Tibet

When travelling in the countryside be prepared for the vehicle to break down and for bad weather. Carry a snack and some warm clothes.
Be aware of the dogs. In the cities there are numerous stray dogs about and in the countryside the villagers and nomads keep large guard dogs (usually chained up).
Stay away from political protests and keep up to date on political developments.

Respect in Tibet

Travellers to Tibet inevitably find Tibetans to be friendly and possessing a great sense of humour. It is appreciated when you try and use Tibetan language when communicating with Tibetans. The further from Lhasa you travel, the more often Tibetan is used.
Avoid placing any Tibetan at risk by discussing political matters - this includes anything about the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government-in-Exile.
Religion is extremely important to the majority of Tibetans, and travellers should endeavour to respect their customs and beliefs. Always circumnavigate Buddhist religious sites or monastery in a clockwise direction, and when in a monastery do not wear a hat, smoke or touch frescoes.
Don't photograph people without permission, and be aware that some locations prohibit photography without a fee.

BANGLADESH

Bangladesh is in South Asia, bordering the Bay of Bengal to the south, mostly surrounded by India and bordering Myanmar in the southeast.

Regions of Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a very small country, broken into 6 administrative divisions:

  • Dhaka Division - home to the capital city
  • Chittagong Division - a picturesque hinterland of large hills forests
  • Rajshahi Division - known for its silk
  • Khulna Division - a relaxing, slow paced area, home of the Sundarbans
  • Sylhet Division - home to endless rolling tea estates and beautiful natural scenery
  • Barisal Division - The land o River, Paddy & Green.

History of Bangladesh

Bangladesh came into existence in 1971 when Bengali East Pakistan seceded from its union with West Pakistan. Although Bangladesh only emerged as an independent country in 1971, its history stretches back thousands of years and it has long been known as a crossroads of history and culture. Here you will find the world's longest sea beach, countless mosques, the largest mangrove forest in the world, interesting tribal villages and a wealth of elusive wild life. Above all else you'll encounter the friendliest people you've ever met.

Climate in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has a tropical monsoon climate. There are basically four seasons in a year — Winter (Dec-Feb), Summer (Mar-May), Monsoon (June-Sep) and Autumn (Oct-Nov).

Travel to Bangladesh

Citizens of all countries need visa to enter Bangladesh.

  • By plane - ZIA International Airport in Dhaka is the main gateway to the country, though Chittagong and Sylhet also receive international flights.
  • By bus - The only open land borders are those with India: from Kolkata, from Siliguri, and from Agartala.

Getting around Bangladesh

  • By Plane - Air travel in Bangladesh is very affordable and convenient.
  • By Bus - Local Bangladeshi buses are generally crowded, often to the extent of people riding on the bus steps (entrance) and sometimes even the roof.
  • By car - Driving in Bangladesh is not for the faint hearted - the road network is fairly good, but dodging irrational bus drivers and weaving in and out of rickshaws isn't easy on the nerves.
  • By train - Bangladesh Railways is the state and only train operator. Trains are generally comfortable, with more legroom than buses. Though the carriages are generally not very clean, the AC and 1st class seats are manageable. Sulob class is the highest 2nd class ticket, with reserved seating and not much different from 1st class.
  • By boat - There are over 230 rivers throughout the country, and boats and ferries are an integral part of travel for locals and tourists alike.

Safety in Bangladesh

Nationwide strikes or "hartals" are widely employed as a means of political expression in Bangladesh. Visitors should avoid all political protests, demonstrations, and marches.
It's best to not eat, drink or smoke anything offered to you by strangers – there's a growing problem in many Asian countries of druggings, and you're likely to see signs warning you against it on buses, trains, etc.
Bottled water is recommended, as the tap water is often unsafe for foreign stomachs.
Mosquitoes can be abundant in some areas and cities, and nets are often provided, even in some of the cheapest hotels.

Respect in Bangladesh

Foreign tourists are still very much a novelty to many Bangladeshis - kids see you as a toy to play with, while others see you as their opportunity to practice their English with endless enthusiasm.
The left hand is considered unclean, used for toilet duties, removing shoes, etc. Always use your right hand to offer or receive anything, and to bring food to your mouth.
Men should never attempt to shake hands with or touch local women — simply put your hand on your heart and bow slightly to greet.
Mosques are sometimes off-limits to non-Muslims and certain areas of them off-limits to women. Cover your head and arms and legs.
Standing from your seat to greet elderly individuals will gain you much respect.
Keep in mind that Bangladesh sees only a tiny number of foreign visitors, and most locals will be genuinely curious about you, watching your every move and expression.

BHUTAN

Bhutan is a small country in the Himalayas between China and India. Besides the stunning natural scenery, the enduring image of the country to most visitors is the architecture. All buildings, whether large monasteries, private houses or even gas stations, must conform to traditional design. The nation is also a bastion of Vajrayana Buddhism, and the teachings of this tradition influence all aspects of life in the kingdom.

Regions of Bhutan

Bhutan can culturally and geographically be divided into three regions, which are further divided into 20 districts or dzongkhag (singular and plural):
  • Central Bhutan — Jakar, the sacred Bumthang Valleys and Jigme Singye Wangchuk National Park
  • Eastern Bhutan — Mongar and the famous cloth weaving area of Lhuentse
  • Western Bhutan — Thimphu, Phuentsholing and the sacred valley of Paro

History of Bhutan

The first humans probably arrived sometime after the Ice Age, and little is known about Bhutan's prehistory. Historical records began with the arrival of Buddhism in the 7th century, when Guru Rimpoche (Padmasambhava) visited Bhutan and established monasteries.
In 1865, Britain and Bhutan signed the Treaty of Sinchulu, under which Bhutan would receive an annual subsidy in exchange for ceding some borderland. Under British influence, a monarchy was set up in 1907; three years later, a treaty was signed whereby the British agreed not to interfere in Bhutanese internal affairs and Bhutan allowed Britain to direct its foreign affairs. This role was assumed by independent India after 1947. Two years later, a formal Indo-Bhutanese accord returned the areas of Bhutan annexed by the British, formalized the annual subsidies the country received, and defined India's responsibilities in defence and foreign relations.

Climate in Bhutan

Although the country expanse is quite small Bhutanese weather varies from location to location mainly depending upon the elevation. In the North of Bhutan on the borders with Tibet it is perennially covered with snow. In the western, central and eastern Bhutan you will mostly experience cold European-like weather. Winter lasts from November to March. Southern Bhutan bordering with India is hot and humid with a sub-tropical climate. Spring and autumn are the best season to visit Bhutan.

Travel to Bhutan

Everybody except citizens of India must apply for a visa at least 30 days in advance. The visa will not be issued without paid bookings for a tour. The only other options for visiting the country are to receive an invitation by 'a citizen of some standing' or a volunteer organization.

There are only two legal entry points into Bhutan: Paro's airport, and the land border with India at Phuentsholing.

Getting around Bhutan

  • Permits - Route permits are required to travel around Bhutan, and there are check posts in most districts east and north of Thimphu where you are required to produce these documents in order to proceed.
  • By road - The roads that cross the country are characterized by their twists, turns, and steep inclines, but despite the difficult topography, they are generally very well maintained and safe.
  • Hitchhiking - As the public transport running between towns in Bhutan is infrequent, hitching is a very common way to get around. The thumb in the air symbol, however, is not recognized, and you will need to flag down a passing vehicle in order to get one to stop. As some drivers pick up passengers as a means of supplementing their incomes, it is customary to offer payment when getting out of the vehicle

Things to see and do in Bhutan

Permits are required to visit all monasteries, dzongs (ancient fortresses) and sacred sites deemed of special significance. These permits are issued by the Cultural Affairs Office in Thimphu.

  • Kurjey Lhakhang, Jakar. A temple built around a cave with a body print of Guru Rinpoche embedded in the wall. Guru Rinpoche practiced meditation here on his first visit to Bhutan and as such it is the earliest Buddhist relic in the country.
  • Taktshang Monastery (Tiger's Nest), Paro. This is one of the most important Buddhist sites in the country, and Guru Rinpoche visited here on his second visit to Bhutan. The temple is built on a 1,200 meter cliff and is Bhutan's most well known sacred site.
  • Singye Dzong , Lhuentse. This is is a sacred valley located near the Tibetan border.
  • National Parks - Jigme Dorji National Park, Jigme Singye Wangchuk National Park, Royal Manas National Park, Trumshingla National Park
  • Wildlife Sanctuaries - Bomdeling Wildlife Sanctuary, Khaling Wildlife Sanctuary, Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary,Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, Toorsa Strict Nature Reserve

Trekking: Bhutan is a popular place for trekking, though the walks are generally quite tough as there are no places to stay or eat in the higher regions, and so all food and camping equipment must be carried in. The Fall and Spring are the best seasons for undertaking a trek. In the summer, the paths are too muddy, while in winter they are snow covered.

Saftey in Bhutan

Crime is not a problem in Bhutan and it remains one of the safest countries in the world.
Hospitals and clinics are located throughout the country, even in the remotest areas. However, travellers should not expect hi-tech facilities, and at many of the Basic Health Units the resident doctor is often away.
Altitude sickness can strike at altitudes as low as 2,500m. Be aware of this before embarking on expeditions in the mountains.

Respect in Bhutan

The King and former king deserve much respect in Bhutan. It is wise to bear this in mind when conversing with local people.
Always pass mani stones, stupas and other religious objects with your right side nearest to the object, and turn prayer wheels in a clockwise direction.
Never sit on mani stones or stupas.
When visiting temples, remove shoes and hat, and wear clothing that expresses respect for the sacred nature of the site.
At monasteries, it is custom to make a small donation to the monks as a sign of respect; and also to the Buddhist statues as a means of developing a generous and spacious mind. However, this is not mandatory.
No Smoking at monasteries and public places. That was the general rule, and now it
