Information

Thredbo is a ski resort within Kosciuszko National Park in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. It is located on the Alpine Way road and is 1380 metres above sea level. It is one of Australia's leading ski resorts and is modelled on a European skiing town.

Currency used in Thredbo

In Thredbo the standard currency used is the Australia Dollar. The Australia dollar comes in denominations of 5c ,10c ,20c ,50c ,$1 & 2$ coins, and $5, $10, $20, $50 & $100 notes. Most bars, restaurants, backpacker hostels, shops and Adventure Tour desks in Thredbo all take credit card, eftpos and cash. Travel to Thredbo

Thredbo is about 2.5 hours drive from Canberra, and 1 hour from Cooma.
National park entry fees apply to vehicles and are payable at entrance stations on roads into the park and other locations. There is also a fee for bus passengers. The fee for a car in summer is $16 per 24 hours. Drive-through (non-stop) passes for the Alpine Way are free.

Winter in Thredbo

The entire resort is open to both skiers and snowboarders. There are beginner and all-mountain lift passes available for 1, 3 or 5 days. Thredbo has over 50 ski runs and employs a standard 3-colour grade system, with green being beginner, blue intermediate and black advanced. The hardest run in Thredbo is said to be Funnel Web, notorious for its near-vertical middle section.

Thredbo has several terrain parks;

  • Wombat World- a terrain parks for kids, which has a few bumps.
  • Easy Rider Park- a terrain park for beginners to intermediates that contains a few jumps and boxes. Located at the base of the Cruiser chairlift. A t-bar runs from the bottom to the top of this park.
  • Intermediate Park
  • Nokia Park- a terrain park for experienced freestyle skiers and boarders with large jumps.

Summer in Thredbo

Climb Australia's highest mainland mountains. Take the year-round chairlift up to Crackenback. From there it is a gradual 6.5 km climb, mostly on metal walkways, to the 2,228m summit of Mt Kosciuszko, mainland Australia's highest mountain. Keen hikers can continue to Mt Townsend, the second highest peak, but there is no formed track and it is not such an easy climb so you need to be confident of your hiking and navigation skills. Mt Kosciuszko can also be climbed from Charlotte Pass.

  • Alpine Training Centre -The Alpine Training Centre, opened in 1996, houses a 50 m and 25 m indoor swimming pool, wading pool with waterslide, two full size basketball courts, squash court, fully equipped gymnasium, physiotherapist and traverse climbing wall. The Australian Institute of Sport has used it for high altitude training for athletes for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
