Charters Towers is a city in northern Queensland, Australia. It is located 135 km southwest from Townsville on the Flinders Highway. The town was founded in the 1870s when gold was found in the area, and rapidly grew to become a regional centre.
History of Charters Towers
The origins of the name is said that Hugh Mosman named the area 'Charters Tors' after W.S.E.M. Charters who was the mining warden at Ravenswood. It is true that there are three low-lying hills around the town which could be described as 'tors'. The name was very short-lived. Just a month after gold was discovered in December 1871, the area was referred to as Charters Towers.
A 12-year-old Aboriginal boy called Jupiter, on Christmas Eve 1871, discovered gold. Jupiter was with a small group of prospectors, Hugh Mosman, James Fraser and George Clarke. Their horses bolted after a flash of lightning and Jupiter was sent to search for them. He found the horses and a nugget of gold at the base of Towers Hill. Jupiters Casinos in Townsville and on the Gold Coast are named after the boy and his lucky strike.
