Fitzroy Island is a continental island located 22 kilometres east of Cairns, Queensland. It became an island when sea levels rose at the end of the last ice age, flooding a plain between a hill that is now Fitzroy Island, and what is now Cape Grafton. Over the 10,000 years since that time, coral reefs have formed in the bay on the protected western side of the island, and lush rainforest on its shore.
The Aboriginal name for this island is Goon-Gan-Jee Island and Gabar Island. Fitzroy Island is a national park, with much of the island off-limits to visitors. Many visitors will remain on the sheltered western side of the island, where the jetty, resort and best snorkelling can be found.

Fitzroy Island is only accessible by ferry from Cairns. The trip takes 45 minutes.
The island
The island's roads are for walking only; they're just dirt tracks of varying quality. You can travel around the island by water in a sea kayak, or hire one of several kinds of boat. Activities on the island include glass bottom boat trips of the island's fringing reef, swimming at any of the islands calm beaches. There is a nude beach about ten minutes walk through the rainforest from the ferry wharf. The island isn't a particularly good place to sunbathe though: the beaches are made of large smooth pieces of coral skeletons, rather than sand.
