Mission Beach is a small village along the Coral Sea in far north Queensland, Australia. The popular tourist destination of Dunk Island lies 4km offshore.
History of Mission Beach
The area was first explored by Edmund Kennedy and his party who landed just to the south of Mission Beach in 1848 at the start of their disastrous trek to Cape York (Kennedy himself was speared to death by Aborigines). The first white settlers established crops such as coffee, mangoes, coconuts and bananas, as well as a timber mill. The area got its name from an Aboriginal mission which was set up at South Mission Beach by the Queensland government in 1914 to house the remainder of the local indigenous population. A major cyclone swept the area in 1918, bringing with it tidal waves and floods. The mission was destroyed and lives were lost.

Things to do in MissionBeach
Rainforest Walks - There are several rainforest walks in the area.
Accessible from MissionBeach are DunkIsland and BedarraIsland.
The beach is flanked by green mountains and provides views out to the FamilyIslands. Close to shore at MissionBeach lies a shallow reef, which runs from the mouth of Porter's Creek at the south end of NorthMissionBeach almost to Clump Point, the rocky point at the north end of MissionBeach. During very low tides portions of this reef are exposed.
Surrounded by World Heritage rainforest on one side and the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef on the other, MissionBeach is home to many wildlife species, most notable is the cassowary. This large flightless bird can be found in the rainforest surrounding the area but is facing extinction due to land clearing, traffic and predators such as wild dogs and feral pigs.
