Day 1 San Francisco
For those who arrive early why not take a stroll across the Golden Gate Bridge, then enjoy a meal in vibrant Chinatown.
Day 2 Big Sur
From the cultural melting pot of San Fran, drive down the coast on Highway 1, stopping in coastal Monterey. Next up is Carmel, a seaside town and artist colony. End the day amid the rugged cliffs and redwood trees of Big Sur.
Days 3-4 Los Angeles
Travel along a beach road and witness scenes of surfers and sea lions along California's coastline. Enjoy a stay in the Mediterranean climes of Santa Barbara before hitting LA. Visit Venice Beach, where body builders and bronzed goddesses can be seen in all their sun-kissed glory.
Days 5-6 San Diego
Bask on the golden beaches of Mission Bay. Visit the Old Town, one of the first Spanish settlements in California, and discover the Gaslamp Quarter. In the evening, perhaps make a border crossing into Mexico to experience Tijuana's nightlife.
Day 7 Lake Havasu
Take in the spectacular rust-red and green landscape of the southern Californian desert. Enter Joshua Tree National Park, known for its unusual plants including cacti, Mojave yuccas and, of course, Joshua trees.
Days 8-9 Grand Canyon
At a massive 450 km long by 6.3 km wide by 600 m deep, the Grand Canyon is truly overwhelming in reality.
Days 10-11 Las Vegas
Venture into the wilds of Kaibab National Forest and then onto famous Route 66. Cross the iconic Mojave Desert and reach the neon lights of Las Vegas.
Day 12 Sierra Nevada
Feel the mercury rise in Death Valley, one of the hottest deserts on the planet. Camp in Sierra Nevada.
Days 13-14 Yosemite National Park
Travel over the Tioga Pass into the heart of the Sierra Nevada. Enter the wilderness of UNESCO World Heritage-listed Yosemite National Park, a land of majestic waterfalls, giant sequoia groves and magnificent granite cliffs.
Days 15 San Francisco
Explore Fisherman's Wharf during free time in San Francisco.
Day 16 Mendocino
Travel to seaside Mendocino where sublime ocean views and a vibrant arts scene make it a popular stopover.
Day 17 Redwood National Park
Head to the old logging town of Eureka and peruse its Victorian architecture. Walk beneath Redwood's impressive inhabitants - some are 2,000 years old and 90 m tall.
Day 18 Crater Lake National Park
Dwarfed by a volcano, Crater Lake has a depth of nearly 600 m - making it the deepest natural lake in North America and the seventh-deepest lake in the world. If time allows, opt to attend a ranger-led Crater Lake talk, and gain an insight into how it came to be.
Day 19 Oregon Dunes
Admire these massive sand dunes that rise dramatically from the shores of the Pacific Ocean. These are some of the tallest in the continent.
Day 20 Silver Falls State Park
Travel through Eugene, a major centre of lumber and wood products. Stop by Salem and then take a short drive to Silver Falls State Park. Choose from a variety of hikes among forested canyons to some of the park's ten waterfalls.
Day 21 Mt St Helens
Drive down a long and winding road through Portland to Mt St Helens, an active volcano that erupted in 1980, blanketing the surrounding hillside in lava that eventually hardened to form the dramatic terrain visible today.
Day 22 Seattle
Voyage up to Mt Rainier, an active volcano covered with glaciers. After a day in the great outdoors, travel to the the birthplace of grunge, Seattle. Perhaps enjoy the final night with a celebratory dinner in one of the city's high-end restaurants.
